How to SAVE money for Traveling?

Okay so the reason you’re here must be, you want to travel but the savings account is looking pretty low? Traveling can be as expensive or as cheap as you make it. There are plenty of ways you can save some extra cash for that dream holiday.

Following these simple tips will help you save money so you can book that trip you have always wanted to do and start Traveling ! Its amazing how your savings can add up just by making small smart changes to your lifestyle.

Here are our recommended tips on how you can save money to travel! We hope you will find some that work for you.

Tip 1. First step! Make the commitment to save for traveling!

Making the decision that you ARE going traveling and you WILL save money is the first step and the biggest step of all. Once you have made that decision there will be no changing your mind. Trust us when we say that you will not regret this decision to travel. You can not buy memories and travelling is all about creating those fun memories that you will cherish forever. Remember jobs fill your pockets, adventures fill your soul.

Tip 2. Open a second Savings Account!

This is so really important if you want to see your travel fund grow. Go to your local bank and open up a separate savings account. This will prevent your everyday expenses from using up all your travel savings. Every pay check you can deposit what ever amount so you don’t spend it.  The more money you have in that account the more interest you can earn from the bank. It’s a great feeling to see the traveling account grow!

Tip 3. Earn more money by getting a second job!

There are many ways you can try and earn more money for your savings account. Below are some examples.

  • Ask your employer for a raise or a promotion
  • Get a second job
  • Do side hustles or cash jobs
  • Move back home (Its much cheaper)
  • Try earning money online
  • Teach English online
  • Sell materials or clothes that you don’t need
  • Cut down on non essential spending’s
  • Rent out any spare rooms
  • Rent out your entire house and live with the family * This is what we are currently doing

Tip 4. Cut down on spending’s to make room for more traveling money!

Now this can always be hard for all you shopping addicts. I can assure you once you realize what you DO and DON’T need, your saving will add up more quicker. Start with cutting down on the blow listed and watch your money grow.

  •  Skip your daily coffee and snacks. Reduce the amount of take away food you buy. Cook your own food for the week to reduce spending’s. Another good tip is to avoid paying for bottled water and soft drinks. Get a re-usable water bottle and fill it up at home. Small sacrifices like this and saving a few dollars a day really adds up down the track.
  • Cut down on the pampering. Treating yourself feels so good but massages, mani, pedi’s , spray tans and eye lash extensions will cost you your hard earned cash. Skip out out on the short term luxury of self pampering and save the cash for long term travel.
  • Quit/ reduce smoking. We don’t smoke but we know that a packet of cigarettes can cost up to $30 a pack! If you smoke a pack a day thats $210 you can save in 1 week. Imagine how far $210 could go when travelling? That could be 1 month accommodation in Cambodia!
  • Cook more instead of take out. Plus learning how cook for yourself is ridiculously satisfying. Shop at your local produce market as this is often cheaper than big supermarket chains. Try allocating one day a week to cook and prep all your food for the week. This saves money and time!
  • Opt for cheaper meal when dining out and think to yourself do I really need another drink? Setting yourself a budget when going out for dinner is a great idea. If you allocate $50 see what you can get for that. It might be 1 meal and a drink or 2 small entrees and a drink. This will help with over spending.
  • Make a spreadsheet and list out every one of your daily/month expenditures. Split into “Needs” and “Wants” Then slowly eliminate the ‘Wants’ from the things you regularly purchase. It’s also a great way to track your spending and see where your money goes. You will soon realize what you “Dont” need.

Tip 5. Reduce your everyday bills!

Making small changes in your house hold can help bring your utility bill down and help with reducing your impact on the environment. Try opening the windows instead of using the air conditioner. If its cold inside wear double layer clothing or keep the heat on low. Turning off the lights when you leave the room and shortening your showers can trim a fair bit off your utility bill just for being efficient and saving energy.

Tip 6. Ditch the card and use cash!

Ditching the card and using cash is a great way to stop over spending. It’s very easy to over spend when using a debit or credit card. Its often when you do check your online banking that you realize just how much you have spent on pay pass. Make a realistic budget for monthly expenditure including petrol, food etc and withdraw that amount of cash. Once the money is gone, its gone so it will teach you how to budget.

Be sure to keep your extra cash in a safe place and dont carry to much cash in your wallet.

Tip 7. Buy used or second hand!

I love op shopping, I mean new clothes can be expensive!! You can find so many good bargains in charity shops. I mean do you really need to buy it brand knew or would it be OK second hand? Op shopping saves you money and also helps people in need.

Tip 8. Swap going out with staying in!

Going out to fancy restaurants, quirky bars and clubs will not help your saving account grow any faster. Remember to keep your travel goals in mind. Instead invite your friends over for drinks.

You could ask every one to bring a dish each. Its a great way to get all your friends together. The wine that you are drinking would have cost you 3 times as much at the bar.

Tip 9. Take public transport or ride.

We all know how expensive fuel, gas or diesel for cars can be. Why not swap car wheels for bike wheels. Not only will this save you money but its also a great way to keep fit and you wont need to go to the gym. Public transport can be a much more cheaper option than driving.
