Located 1.5 hours drive from Sydney, the Blue Mountains offer a refreshing escape from the bustling city life. Famous for its breathtaking landscapes, dramatic cliffs, ancient rainforests and cascading waterfalls. The Blue Mountains are a haven for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts.

Whether you’re a thrill-seeker, a photography enthusiast, nature lover or simply looking to disconnect from the hustle and bustle, the Blue Mountains has something extraordinary to offer for everyone. From tranquil hikes to thrilling outdoor activities and plenty of scenic lookouts, this is our guide to the best places to visit to make your trip to the Blue Mountains an unforgettable one!

Why is it called the Blue Mountains?

The Blue Mountains are a vast region stretching out 11,400 kilometres. You may be wondering why the region is called the ‘Blue’ Mountains? This is due to the particular trees found in the mountains – the eucalyptus. In the sun the oil in the leaves is realised into the air and from a distance the Blue Mountains look covered in a blue haze. Looking as if the mountains are blue themselves.

Best time to visit the Blue Mountains?

The Blue Mountains is a wonderful place to visit all year round. However if you want to enjoy every element of this spectacular region, we recommend going in the warmer months from September to May. This way you can take your time to explore the region, without it being too cold. Another tip would be to avoid visiting during the school holidays if you can. Some popular places do get busy and parking is limited. Also a great way to avoid crowds is to explore popular areas early in the morning. Not only can you enjoy the Blue Mountains in peace but its also a great way to start the day.

To our surprise, we were there in winter from June to July. Most of the days were sunny but it was very cold at night and early in the morning. Make sure you are always prepared especially on long hikes and trails. The weather can drop significantly deep in the valleys and some trails can be quite muddy. We always packed warm clothes, rain jacket, enough water and hiking boots if required. On the longer hikes that were a little more remote we also both carried a seperate EPIRB (emergency position indicating radio beacon) on our backpacks. Do take caution when hiking and exploring areas of the Blue Mountains. There are many cliff edges and places for potential injury.

Best places to stay in the Blue Mountains?

During our unforgettable trip to the Blue Mountains we stayed in our camper van and in a beautiful cabin. There are a few options on Wiki Camps but the best FREE campsite is the hidden gem that is Mount York Campground. This campsite has a dog-friendly policy, toilets and a number of campsites. For anyone planning to spend a few weeks in the Blue Mountains, Mount York Campground is an absolute must-visit. you can find more information here.

If you want to stay somewhere closer to the main town of Katoomba we recommend the KCC Camp ground. A powered site costs only $40 a night for two people or $76 for two nights. This is a cheaper option than the other caravan parks. The camp ground has a communal bbq area, small kitchen, toilets and hot showers. We spent 2 nights here when we needed to charge our auxiliary batteries and top up our fresh water tank in the van. To book online click here.

If you’re wanting something a little more fancier then we highly recommend staying at one of the Logan Brae Retreat Cabins. We spent 2 nights in the Woodlands Cabin overlooking the Kanimbla Valley. The cabin also featured a small infinity plunge pool, gorgeous stone bathtub, his and hers double shower and sink and not a pod coffee machine but an espresso coffee machine. Another nice touch was the fireplace which had been pre made so a just one strike of a match you were cosy enjoying the warm fire. The outside patio was thoughtfully planned with Edison string lights providing a warm ambiance over the outdoor seating bench and even a BBQ if you want to cook outside and take in the breathtaking views. We only spent 2 nights here however we wished we could have stayed for longer. It was an experience we will always remember.
