How to hike Pergasingan Hill without a guide- North Lombok

If you’re North Lombok and you are looking for a spectacular short hike Pergasingan Hill is the perfect hike for you. Pergasingan Hill offers stunning views of Sembalun town and the unique, colourful farmland below. What’s even better is this short hike can be easily done on without a guide and we are going to tell you how. In this blog we will share all the important information on hiking Pergasingan Hill, best times to go, where to stay and include lots of photos.

Pergasingan Hill or Bukit Pergasingan is a 1750 meter high hill in the small mountain village of Sembalun. The trail takes just over one hour to reach the main viewpoint at the top. You do not have to be a seasoned hiker to do this one which makes it’s suitable for nearly everyone. We highly recommend doing Pergasingan Hill for sunrise or sunset. We chose to start hiking Pergasingan Hill super early because we love hiking at sunrise. The sunrise views were just amazing.

Best place to stay when doing Pergasingan Hill?

Pergasingan Hill is located in the small town of Sembalun. Sembalun is a great town to base yourself as its is surrounded by lush mountain ranges, unqiue vegetable farms, stunning waterfalls and beautiful viewpoints.

We spent a total of 2 nights in Sembalun staying at Radiya Guesthouse. For a night in a double room with breakfast included costs only 250,000 IDR ($25 AUD). The owner Mr Nanang was super helpful with organising a scooter, sharing local suggestions on where to go and made sure the hot water for coffee and tea was always full. He also makes the best banana pancakes for breakfast. To book a room at Radiya Guesthouse click here.

What to bring for Pergasigan Hill hike?

If you’re going to hike up Pergasingan Hill for sunrise like we did there are a few items I would recommend to take with you. Firstly you will be starting the hike in the dark so you will need a good Head Torch. Wearing a good pair of Sneakers will make the hike up easier and safer. Early mornings are very cold so I recommend wearing a Warm Jacket. Bring a Re-usable Water Bottle to stay hydrated and to also do our part with helping the environment in reducing plastic waste. Entry up Pergasingan Hill is 50,000 IDR pp so be sure to bring money with you to pay on the way back.

How to hike Pergasingan Hill without a guide?

The hike to the top of Pergasingan Hill will take approximately 1 to 2 hours depending on fitness levels and how many rest breaks you take. The hike down might only take an hour but make sure to take your time as it can be quite steep in places.

The start of the hike is conveniently pinned on Google Maps as “PERGASINGAN HILL – Start point Hiking”. First you will park your scooter at a small hut which is the Pergasingan Hill ticket hut. This is where you are meant to pay the 50,000 IDR entrance fee. We started at 4 am in the morning so there was nobody there to take our payment. We paid for our ticket after the hike. The hut is located on Google Maps across from “Camping Ground 1000 Meter”.

Follow the dirt road up closer to the mountain and across a newly built bridge. Keep following the road until you will see a small sign on the left at the base of the mountain that says PERGASINGAN.

This is the trail that will take you all the way up to the top. The first section is a very steep incline of rocks and boulders, so be sure to take your time and always have 3 points of contact.

After the first 30-40 minute climb the trail will level out and take you through an area of thick trees and bushes. From here the trail will steepen again all the way to the top in which you will have amazing views of Sembalun.

If you love sunrise hikes be sure to add Mount Bromo to your Indonesian bucket list. Read all about our sunrise guide here.

The most amazing view from the top

We stopped at a plateau just a little below the peak. This is a great viewpoint and place for photos with un interrupted views of Sembalun and Mount Rinjani. Mount Rinjani is Sembalun’s famous Volcano and another hike we would love to do.

We stayed here watching the sun rise as it lit up the below farm fields and surrounding Mountains. The mixture of fog and soft morning light over the multi coloured farmland is what makes Sembalun so picturesque.

There is also the option of camping up top of Pergasingan Hill. You can either bring your own tent or book a camping trip. When we sent up drone up we did spot a few tents on the ridge. Jackson Groves has camped up the top off Pergasingan Hill and wrote a really informative blog about it. You can check it out here.

Pergasingan Hill is starting to become an increasingly popular hike, that might be due to Sembalun’s incredible natural beauty and unique landscape.

After the sun was up we enjoyed the view for a bit longer before making our way down the hill. Be sure to take your time on the descent as the hike is quite steep in some spots.

Pergasingan Hill was a relatively easy and rewarding trail with the most incredible scenic views. North Lombok’s stunning scenery is what makes Lombok a country that will leave you speechless. We can’t wait to return to the small town of Sembalun and discover more hikes. We hope you have enjoyed reading our guide on Pergasingan Hill and that it has inspired you to add it to your lost of things to do when you visit North Lombok.
